All About the Acne Laser

Acne is an embarrassing problem. If your face is filled with pimples and swollen red inflammation chances are, you’re having trouble getting out of the house without feeling self conscious. Acne is common with teenagers and adults but we tend to associate the problem specifically with teenagers. No matter what age group you’re in, the goal is the same – to get rid of the acne as soon as possible. This is where the acne laser comes in.

What is the Laser?

More and more places throughout the country are starting to offer acne treatments with the laser. This is a laser treatment that is applied directly to the affected areas. The goal is that the laser will help by injecting a green light laser directly to the area which helps reduce inflammation. The laser itself can also kill the surface bacteria that is also a cause of acne.

How do you treat acne?

The typical protocol for treating acne is to use a special acne cleanser and moisturizer as well as an astringent and a treatment cream with benzoyle peroxide. There is nothing wrong with this method. Some people even take this one step further and go to adermatologist to see if they can prescribe anything to help it. Drugs do exist that are supposed to help with acne. A healthy diet also helps.

A Laser Works When Other Things Don’t

But what if all of that isn’t working? It works in a lot of people, especially if they add in the healthy diet. But this isn’t a guarantee. Getting rid of acne is about finding out what’s causing it, washing your face and moisturizing with the right products, and finding a good acne treatment, whether prescription or not, that will help.In some cases, that simply is not enough. This is the moment where getting a laser treatment is a good thing. Not only does the laser get rid of your current acne flair-up but also helps prevent breakouts that may happen in the future.

Do the treatments hurt?

Actually, they are sort of uncomfortable. Things like facials and facial massages are known for being relaxing – these are important for your well being, too. However, laser treatments for acne are not that straightforward and relaxing. As soon as the laser touches your skin, it pinches (at the very least). This means that you will need to prepare yourself mentally if you are getting the surgery done.

Are there side effects?

Yes, there are side effects but most of them are reported as being temporary. When the laser is used on your skin, it hurts a little bit. The treatment can be irritating, especially if the skin was sensitive. The side effects include a puffy face and reddened skin. The swelling normally goes down.

How long does it take to work?

If you have a special event to go to in a few weeks but you want your acne to clear up first, a good bet is to start the treatments right away. Some people report seeing progress after only a few weeks. This seems true for most of the other places in that area.

Should you get the laser?

If you are not sure if you want the laser, you don’t want to spend the money for nothing. That is why it is a good idea to see a dermatologist and examine all your options. They may choose to start you off on a simple program where you use a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer as well as any stronger treatments. If these measures don’t work, the next step is the laser.
