Acne Cream and Acne Skin Care Basics

Acne is a skin problem where the sebaceous or oil glands in the skin are overactive. The excess oil that is excreted from these glands causes all sorts of problems including inflammation and irritation. In addition, bacteria are also part of the problem and it can be one of the causes.

That is the basic scientific reason why acne exists. However, the question remains – why do the oil glands start producing more than they need? This can be from a variety of factors including hormones, stress, and genetics. But, no matter what the cause is, it is important to choose the proper skin care such as an acne cleanser and various acne creams.

Myths and Skin Care

It was originally thought that acne was caused by excess dirt on the skin. So, people would scrub their face with harsh abrasives in order to “scrub” the acne off. There are two things that are wrong with that line of thinking. The first is that excess dirt is not a true cause of acne. Also, harsh cleansers and abrasive scrubs could make the situation even worse. This is because the real problem is that your skin ends up producing too much oil. When you scrub your face and dry it out with harsh ingredients, this actually causes your skin to produce even more oil and can worsen the problem. Instead, a more balanced approach needs to be taken.

The Right Skin Care for Acne

Harsh cleansers and abrasive scrubs make the situation worse. So, another acne skin care solution needs to be found. The goal is to find something that will be effective but also gentle. This means that you need to find the best ingredients possible and follow the steps of good skin care which are cleans, tone, exfoliate, and moisturize. You can also put on a treatment after the moisturizer.

When looking for a cleanser for acne it is best to find something that is mild but that is also designed for acne prone or problem skin. It is a good idea to get recommendations from your dermatologist when it comes time to choose a product. You may need to try a few brands before settling on one that works. The next step is to use an astringent. In the case of acne prone skin, this should be a product that is able to stop excess oil production without being harsh. Witch hazel extract is an excellent example of this.

Exfoliation is a natural process that your skin needs to go through. Harsh abrasives do get the exfoliation job done. However, it is too harsh for acne prone skin to be able to handle. However, alpha hydroxy acid is an ingredient that exfoliates in a gentle way. It is important to exfoliate because you don’t want to run the risk of the hair getting stuck in the pores which can cause even more of a problem.

The moisturizer should be applied after the astringent. Find a product that compliments the cleanser you chose and will also contain ingredients to help the acne. Finally, you can put a concentrate spot treatment on the breakouts. Look for a product that contains benzoyle peroxide. Over the counter treatments will have a lower amount of benzoyle peroxide so if you need something stronger you’ll have to ask your doctor or dermatologist.

Final Thoughts

It is so important to follow the basic steps for caring for your skin, especially when you have acne. Once you get the oil under control and treat the bacterial infection and the inflammation your skin will start to look better. If you are using the right products, the acne will eventually go away. The goal is to find something that not only works but that also leaves the skin looking healthy, glowing, and fres.
